Texas hosts several cockroach species including the American cockroach (the large reddish-brown “water bug” common in Houston and Austin), the German cockroach (the most prolific indoor species found in Dallas, San Antonio, and Fort Worth kitchens), and the Oriental cockroach common in damp basements and utility areas.

German cockroaches in particular are notoriously resistant to over-the-counter sprays. A single female can produce over 300 offspring in her lifetime, and populations double every 30 days under optimal conditions. Harborage areas in kitchen cabinets, behind appliances, and inside wall voids are impossible to reach with surface sprays alone.
